Why Trust Is So Important
Let me begin by asking you a few questions:
Do you know how to boil an egg?
Can you change a flat tyre on your car?
Do you know how to wire an electric plug?
Would you be able to clear a blocked drain?
What?....
You may well be wondering why I'm asking you these things, but
just bear with me.
You see well into my late teens I was unable to answer "Yes" to
any of those questions. I had great parents and they did just
about everything for me. In fact they still would now if I let
them!
And I was certainly grateful!
But it had it's downside as I'll explain.
I still lived with my parents when I first learned to drive
and bought my first car. But having a car means you've got to
look after it. The trouble was, because I had so many things
done for me, and also when I was at school I had never had much
interest in practical subjects like woodwork and metalwork, I
really hadn't got a clue about auto maintenance. But not to
worry, Dad was always ready and willing to help.
Until, that is, I got a puncture when I was on a remote road far
from home. There were no mobile phones in those days so I
couldn't call anyone. So it was simple, I could sit and wait
for someone to come along and ask for help, or I could set
about changing the wheel myself. No choice really, so I took a
look at the owners manual to see what I had to do and I did it.
And guess what? There really wasn't a problem and in a few short
minutes I changed the wheel and was on my way. And I've done
the same thing a number of times since.
I also know how to boil an egg, wire an electric plug, and even
unblock the drain. And lots more besides.
So what's that got to do with trust?
Well simply I learned to trust myself to do those things. You
see because I had always had things done for me and, when I
watched others doing them, convinced myself that I wouldn't be
able to do them, my subconscious mind believed me.
When I struggled with the practical things at school it simply
reinforced it. My mind became conditioned to believe that I was
not going to be able to do those tasks.
But when it came to dealing with that puncture I had no choice.
There were step by step instructions on what to do and I just
had to get on with it. I had to override what my subconscious
tried to tell me and trust myself to do it. Can you imagine
how great I felt when I had completed the task successfully?
And throughout my life I have learned to trust myself to do new
things and take on challenges. I trusted myself to become a
successful presenter and public speaker, I trusted myself to go
out and learn to sell to people at all levels, and I trusted
myself to give up a well-paid job and start my own business.
Just like the owner's manual told me how to change a wheel, I
found out how to do the other things I've accomplished. The
help, advice and instructions were always there.
And the same is true for you! Don't be stopped from doing what
you desire by your subconscious mind. You may well have become
conditioned to believe that you cannot do things. You've
probably come to believe you have your position in life and
that wealth, happiness, financial freedom or maybe just a job
you enjoy are beyond you. But don't accept it. The
opportunities are out there you just have to seek them out.
But how do you take that first step? Simple, you must just
trust yourself.

Getting To Grips With Time Wasters
Two weeks ago in Self Improvement Front Line you received some
useful pointers on how to gain control of your time. I hope that
you found them useful and have maybe already started to make use
of them in your own life.
But if you really want to gain control of your life by better
management of your time it is vital to be able to identify the
areas where you waste time.
It's an area that you should closely examine and to help you
the following are all possible reasons for time being wasted:
- Lack of focus. Remember you must have clearly defined goals
and "SMART" objectives. Make sure you are motivated.
- Lack of delegation. Are there things you do that could
actually be done by someone else?
- Lack of communication. If you work with others or need the
cooperation of others then you must be clear in telling them
what you are doing and what you need from them. This may be
particularly so if you work at home and have family members
around. They must know what you are doing and why, and what
you need from them.
- Lack of planning. You must plan your activities carefully.
For instance you will gain productive time by taking about
fifteen minutes at the end of each day to plan what you have
to do the next day. Write it down and prioritize the tasks.
- Failure to look ahead. Part of your planning should involve
anticipating potential problems. It is far better to get it
right first time than to have to spend time fire-fighting.
- Tiredness.Failure to plan will almost certainly lead to you
doing too much. You are far less effective if you are tired
and more prone to making mistakes which means time wasted
later putting things right.
- Interruptions. Look at the activities you do and things that
can interrupt or distracxt you. Try to eliminate them or
schedule them into your day at the most appropriate times.
All of these factors can have an effect on your available time
and how you use it. But more specifically the following are
just a few of the possible areas for improving the use of your
time:
- Phone Calls - You may need to have phone contact with clients,
customers, or suppliers, or simply family and friends. However
do you really need to personally take every call you get? You
would probably be more effective by using an answering machine
or service. You can then phone back at a time that suits you
and will have the added advantage of being able to prepare
properly for the call by gathering all the material you may
need to deal with it. Set aside times in the day when you are
available to take calls and communicate it to those that are
likely to need to contact you. You could also set up an
appointment system so that people call at pre-arranged times
and you can get together all that you need to deal with their
call.
The same applies to calls you have to make. Don't keep
breaking off from tasks to make phone calls. Instead list
the calls you need to make and set time aside for them during
the day.
- E-mails - You probably receive many E-mails during the day
but do you really need to read them as they arrive? Probably
not, so have set times when you read your E-mails, possibly
the start of the day, the start of the afternoon , and again
at the end of the day. Schedule it into your day and also
when you read them rememeber to add any tasks resulting from
them into your schedule. As with phone calls, have set time
for sending E-mails.
- Visits - You really need to be able to limit who visits you
and when. If you work from home your family and friends can
easily assume that you will be glad to see them whenever they
decide to drop in. You need to tell them politely but firmly
that you cannot see them whilst you are working. Remember,
good communication is vital.
There are many more ways that you may be interrupted,
especially if you are a home-based worker. Identify what they
are and ensure that you find an effective way of dealing with
them. That way you will soon start to see the benefits created
by having more control over how you spend your time.
There is much more on this in the excellent book,"Super Tactics
of Time Management Experts".

Using Psychic Suggestion to Achieve Your Goals
One of the secrets of successfully achieving your objectives
in life is to convince your subconscious mind of the desire
that you have to do so. Your subconscious contains masses of
data that has been acquired based on your experiences in
life so far and it has an enormous influence on your actions
in the way it uses it.
Therefore feeding your mind with information on topics
relating to your goals will help you towards their attainment
by ensuring that the right subjects are at the forefront.
One of the ways of doing so is through Psychic Suggestion.
This involves totally immersing yourself during your waking
hours in things relating to the subject you wish to focus on.
It is particularly important in the hours before bedtime as
your subconscious will express in dream form aspects relating
to your goals and how you can achieve them.
Some of the things you can do are:
- Read books, magazines and articles about the subject.
- Watch films or dvds on the topic.
- Research your subject on the internet
- Study maps or photographs if it relates to a particular
place.
- Examine photographs or old letters or diaries relating to
someone you may wish to focus upon.
- If your goal is related to money then read financial
newspapers or magazines.
- For health matters read or research in the various media
already mentioned but also look at your self in the mirror
and focus on the relevant area.
- To confront your hopes or fears study the subject concerned
and maybe read about other people that have conquered it or
have achieved similar goals.
- Read and study motivational and personal development
products.
Try to think of all the ways you can of getting totally
absorbed in your topic. The more facts and information you
can feed into your mind the greater the chance of discovering
those life changing pointers.
