How To Get A Sense of Satisfaction Every Day
In recent newsletters you have learned a little about using
lists to gain effective control of your time.
Last week you discovered the techniques for putting together a
"to-do list" that you can use as a real tool to help you manage
your activity each day.
And you may remember that I told you that once I have compiled
my list I draw a line under it.
So why do I do that?
Well the saying "to draw a line under it" refers to bringing a
matter to a close and that is essentially what is happening
with the list. In fact it is often referred to as a
"closed list".
What you are doing by drawing the line under your list is
stating that the tasks above the line are the things you will
do on that day. This will be the full list of things that you
must do.
So you can see why it is important that you have followed the
processes described previously to get a realistic working
list.To truly gain control of your time you must know the
amount of work that you can do in a day. By using this closed
list you will soon be able to define it more definitely.
As you complete each task on your list either tick it off or
transfer it to a "Did It" list. Then at the end of the day
with everything completed you will soon see that you will get
a tremendous feeling of satisfaction.
You will have moved from being governed by a "to do list" to
managing yourself with a "did it list".
But you probably get things that crop up during the day, like
phone calls, emails, or other interruptions like someone just
dropping in on you or asking you to do something.
So how do you deal with those?
Well you may remember an article earlier in the year in Self
Improvement Front Line that gave you some advice on handling
time-wasters. Just in case you've forgotten here are the key
points from it:
- Phone Calls - You may need to have phone contact with clients,
customers, or suppliers, or simply family and friends. However
do you really need to personally take every call you get? You
would probably be more effective by using an answering machine
or service. You can then phone back at a time that suits you
and will have the added advantage of being able to prepare
properly for the call by gathering all the material you may
need to deal with it. Set aside times in the day when you are
available to take calls and communicate it to those that are
likely to need to contact you. You could also set up an
appointment system so that people call at pre-arranged times
and you can get together all that you need to deal with their
call.
The same applies to calls you have to make. Don't keep
breaking off from tasks to make phone calls. Instead list
the calls you need to make and set time aside for them during
the day.
- E-mails - You probably receive many E-mails during the day
but do you really need to read them as they arrive? Probably
not, so have set times when you read your E-mails, possibly
the start of the day, the start of the afternoon , and again
at the end of the day. Schedule it into your day and also
when you read them remember to add any tasks resulting from
them into your schedule. As with phone calls, have set time
for sending E-mails.
- Visits - You really need to be able to limit who visits you
and when. If you work from home your family and friends can
easily assume that you will be glad to see them whenever they
decide to drop in. You need to tell them politely but firmly
that you cannot see them whilst you are working. Remember,
good communication is vital.
Ideally you should be looking to add replies to emails and
phone calls as an item to your list for tomorrow. Similarly,
schedule tasks that are created as a result.Just think about
the simple changes you can make to deal with the things
that interrupt your working day. And start to use closed lists.
Not only do they give you a huge sense of satisfaction at the
end of the day but you find that they enable you to switch off
completely and get on with enjoying the rest of your day. You
will know that the next day you will have a new list of things
to do and that all your time will be spent productively.
So don't put it off; Start today and don't forget to rule a
line under it!

How to Overcome a Confidence Crisis
By Emmanuel Segui
A confidence crisis is more than a minor dip - it's more
serious. A confidence crisis is triggered by setbacks like
losing an important business order, break-up of a valued
relationship or losing a job.
When this happens, even a small thing can send you over the
edge, creating an unwanted crisis. To protect yourself from
such a situation, you need to take control of yourself, and
your life.
You must learn to ignore external stimuli. Don't be
affected by what people say or are likely to say about you.
More important, you should not be worried about failure.
Believe in the old adage that you cannot win always. There
are bound to be failures, or I'd say, feedback, and
challenges in life, despite your best efforts. Take them in
your stride.
Maintain a diary, and note down all positive things that
happen during the course of the day. You will be surprised
to note the number of positive things that are happening
around you, which you missed earlier. This helps you
refocus on what is true about you: you're an extraordinary
person.
This will help you think positively, and dispel your
doubts. This will also break the stranglehold of negative
thoughts that had lowered your self-esteem, and generated
doubts about your abilities and skills. Repeat to yourself
every day that you are getting better at what you do, and
feel the difference.
Make as if it was true. If you think you can, you can… If
you think you can't, you're probably right said Henry Ford.
Don't forget this beautiful and true advice.
Take some time to think about your relationships. If a
friend is having a bad influence on your self-confidence or
if the relationship is more of a burden than a pleasure,
you are better off if you stop meeting that person.
Instead, try to build new relationships with people you
like and admire, and who are supportive of you.
Ideally, form a group of supportive friends and give them
your support in turn. This will do your self-confidence a
world of good.
Stop wasting your energy on things that can go wrong. Think
about the worst thing that could possibly happen. You will
realize that it is not the end of the world.
Focus on the subjects over which you have control and
reduce your exposure to events over which you have little
or no control. Monitor your internal dialogue, and silence
the negative voice that keeps criticizing you.
A useful strategy is to visualize a situation that bothers
or worries you. Jot down these points. Think of people who
have successfully crossed these hurdles, and ask yourself
if they could do it then why can't I?
Think of yourself as someone who is brimming with
confidence, and is ready to take up the challenge. Make
this a habit.
You will find that you too can overcome these obstacles.
Self-confidence is more than a simple state of mind. It
also flows from your physical well-being. Regular exercise
adds to your energy levels, and makes you feel fitter and
confident. Similarly, dressing well adds several notches to
your self- confidence.
Even simple things like sleeping well will make you feel
better. In contrast, drinking to drive away you woes will
add to your unhappiness.
You must also learn to speak up. When you hesitate to
speak, you are doing yourself a great disfavor. Very often,
you become a prisoner of your shyness. You want to speak,
but your shyness does not let you do so. This eats into
your self-esteem and self- confidence.
Don't allow this situation to continue. Always remember
that you may know more than your colleague who is the
centre of attention because he has a view on every subject.
Others may find your views more interesting, if only they
heard them.
Also, don't think that you can change your fortunes
overnight. It takes time to change things. What is needed
is your belief in yourself. That's all.
