How To Make The Most Of Your Memories
I saw a TV program the other day that was all about memory, if
you're in the UK you may have seen it too. It was full of
fascinating facts and case studies and really opened my mnd
to ideas I'd never really thought about.
One of the people it focussed on was a man with a severe
memory defect. In fact he had virtually no memory at all.
Even the simplest of tasks presented difficulty to him as
he simply couldn't remember what he had to do.
The best way he handled it was to write everything down. He
made the same journey on a regular basis but still had to
have written instructions of precisely where he should go,
what train he should catch, what time he needed to be in
certain places, etc.
Life was really difficult for him but the point was made that
he was probably actually happier than most people and worried
far less. The reason for that was that because of his lack of
memory he actually had nothing on which to base his plans for
the future. So he had none and simply took each day as it came.
This was something that I'd never considered - that in order
to make plans and set goals you must have memories of past
events and experiences to draw upon. Simple eh?
So how can this help you?
Well, assuming you have a fully functioning memory, you
already have a wealth of information that you can use to shape
your future life. All that you have done and experienced can
be used to help you to set the goals you want.
But you must be prepared to do so.
So each day take some time out to reflect on what you have
done in the past. Focus on the goals you have and the things
you want to achieve and look back at past events or experiences
that will give you clues to how you can attain them.
Even the things in your past that you are maybe not proud of
should be used as learning experiences. You may recall in a
previous newsletter I talked about why you should never regret
anything, but instead learn from it. All that happens in your
life is stored in your memory, often subconsciously, so using
a quiet moment to bring it forward can give you huge benefits.
Your own memory is the ultimate resource with which you can
shape your future. Just take the time to use it.

Don't Be A Busy Fool
Have you ever heard of the term "a busy fool"?
One of the keys to becoming effective in managing your time is
to avoid becoming exactly that. You must learn to work at the
things that will really benefit you in your job or business.
So many people claim to not have enough time to achieve the
things they want.
"Oh, if only I had the time", you will hear them exclaim.
Maybe there are times when you think that way yourself. I
certainly have done in the past. But not anymore!
I have learned to to tell the difference between "real work"
and "busy work".
In his book, "Do It Tomorrow and Other Secrets of Time
Management", Mark Forster deals with this topic. (You can get
the book from good booksellers or via his website at
http://www.markforster.net )
The following are the guidelines he gives on identifying
whether your work is busy work rather than real work:
Real Work
- Advances your business or job.
- Consists of what you are paid for or what makes you money.
- Impacts positively on the bottom line.
- Uses your skills and knowledge to the full.
- Takes you out of your comfort zone.
- Is challenging.
- Only you can do it.
Busy Work
- Avoids the work needed to advance your job or business.
- Gets in the way of making money or doing what you are paid
to do.
- Affects the bottom line negatively.
- Underuses your skills and knowledge.
- Keeps you within your comfort zone.
- Is easy.
- Anyone can do it.
So take a look at your work and the things you actually do
and see how effective you are. Then make any changes you need
and you'll soon see that you have time to do the things you
want.

5 Tips For Decidng Just How Important Your Tasks Really Are
Carrying on with the theme of time management, you have already
learned about the benefits of organising your tasks into
working lists.
But how do you go about defining whether a task is important or
not, or whether or not it is urgent?
Here are some ideas to help you in deciding:
1) What are some of the benefits that you'll get from completing
the task. The more important that you feel the benefits are then
the more important the task.
2) What would happen if you failed to do the task? Would there
be serious consequences or would it not really matter? If it is
the latter you must ask yourself whether it really needs to be
done at all.
3) It is important to always have clearly defined goals and
objectives. Will completing the task help you in achieving them?
If so it is important, but you also need to know the degree of
effect that it will have to help you to decide how urgent it is.
4) Is there a good pay-off in completing the task. If it does
not have one and does not give satisfaction then how important
is that task?
5) If you do not get the task done by a specific date or time
will it have negative consequences for you? Time bound tasks
are always likely to be the most important.
So take a look at your tasks and make sure that you really do
need to get them all done.
