Why You Should Ask For Help

Just over a week ago I sent an email to most of you asking if
there were any particular topics or issues relating to your own
personal development that you would like to see covered in "Self
Improvement Front Line" in the future.

Thank you if you replied, especially for the kind comments,
your ideas and requests will be taken on board. But I was a
little surprised at how few replies I received so if you just
haven't got round to it yet, why not do so now: Just send your
email to:

news@selfimprovementskills.com

Don't worry though, if you just want to continue to read your
copy each week that's fine with me. I hope you find the content
interesting and helpful.

What I would say though is that you should always be looking out
for opportunities to improve your life and achieve your goals.
And the number one resource for doing just that is people. It
doesn't matter whether it's by getting information from me via
this newsletter or through interaction with others, you really
should not waste the wealth of knowledge and advice that is
avaialble to you.

You've learned before about the importance of develping the
right mindset and of learning from other successful people.
Remember that you can discover so much if you take a look at
"The Secrets of Self Made Millionaires" program. If you didn't
get the chance to do so yet here's the link again:

But you should also ensure you are constantly open to new ideas
and gaining knowledge. So whenever you can seek to engage people
in conversation and never be afraid to ask for help or advice.

Seek out those that have achieved some of the things you are
aiming for. And don't be afraid to ask questions of those that
you look up to. There are very few people who will not share at
least some of what they know or have exerienced with someone
who shows a genuine interest.

Use the right sort of questions to get peole talking, i.e. begin
with "who", "what", "where", "When", "why", and "how" and just
listen.

You can make things happen in your life but you'll find it so
much easier if you let others help you.

How To Stop Interruptions Wasting Your Time

How are you getting on with organising your time?

In recent editions of Self Improvement Front Line you have
learned about the benefits of using lists to gain effective
control of your time.

You have discovered why you should close each day's "to do
list" by drawing a line under the tasks that you have
identified that need to be done.

Then by crossing them off you will end your day with a
"did it list", and a great feeling of satisfaction at
getting everything done.

But what about the things that come up during the day? No
matter how well you organize yourself it's inevitable that
the unexpected is going to occur.

Well it's back to your lists.

Each time a task is created by a phone call, an email or
some form of personal contact you must get into the habit of
writing it down. Then you have to quickly decide when it
needs to be done.

Remember how you broke that original task list down into
workable chunks by identifying the things you must do, those
you want to do and those that you should do.

Well for each item that crops up during the day you must
make similar decisions. Put each one into one of these three
categories:

- The urgent things that you must do today.

- Things that are important but that can be done tomorrow.

- Things that you can schedule for a later date.

In practise you should find that there are very few things
that are that urgent that you must do them the same day.
But if there are they need to be written under the line of
your closed list for the day.

Try to make sure that you don't fail to do any of the things
originally on your list. If you do find that it is beginning
to happen regularly then you need to look at reducing the
amount of things you are commiting yourself to each day.
Don't let it continue for more than three or four days.

Most of the tasks that materialise during the day should go
onto your list for tomorrow. This way you are keeping
control of your time effectively. There may be some tasks
that you can schedule for later dates but be careful that
you are not just putting things off that must be done.

Even if you identify something that does not need to be
completed for three or four weeks you should not leave it
until the last minute to do. See if you can break it down
into smaller parts and start on it tomorrow.

Remember this is all about you managing your time and not
your tasks controlling you. So be proactive and you will
find you are far more productive and efficient.

To succeed you really should get into the habit of not
doing anything without writing it down. It really is a good
habit to get into!

Don't forget that there is much more you can learn about
time management in "Super Tactics of Time Management
Experts".

The 7 Steps To Solving Your Problems

In life, whether it be in personal matters or business affairs,
things do not always go to plan and you are certain to
encounter problems at some stage. It may be a minor thing like
losing your internet connection or missing your train,or there
could be a major problem like fire or a mechanical breakdown.

The important thing is that you have in place a way of handling
problems and then solving them. There have been many problem
solving prcesses designed by business managers and consultants
for use in the work environmment but you may equally find them
useful in other aspects of your life.

With all methods though there are some key steps that you need
to take. Here they are for you to consider:

#1 Acknowledge The Problem

This is not always as obvious as it seems as sometimes you will
ignore what you believe to be small things in order to get your
work done or task completed. This will only cause problems later,
so the sooner the problem is acknowledged the quicker you can
overcome it.So be brave and face facts if things aren't going
right.

#2 Define The Problem

It is important that you are clear and precise in stating what
the problem is. Write down precisely what is, or isn't,
happening to cause you difficulties.

#3 Identify The Cause

It is essential that you know what is causing the problem before
you can start work on resolving it. If other people are affected
be sure to get them involved and if possible get a group together
and brainstorm the possible causes. That means simply writing
down everything that comes to mind and should be done to a set
timescale, say 30 minutes, and you should not pre-judge anything
as things may come to light that you had not thought of. For
example you could discover that a problem is occurring because
you or someone else have not been adequately trained to carry
out a task.

#4 Define The Expecations of The Outcome

It is vital that you know precisely what result you want to
achieve by resolving the problem. Define what the ultimate
outcome should be and put in place a way of measuring
your success.

#5 Identify A Solution

Once again you should involve any other people who are affected
by the problem and use the same brainstorming method as before
to identify possible solutions. Then you need to come up with a
shortlist before deciding on the solution that is best.

#6 Select The Best Solution

You need to take your shortlist and decide which is the best way
of dealing with the problem.

You need to look at four factors;

Feasibility - how realistic is it?

Contribution to Objective - does it solve the problem in the way
you have identified as the required outcome and to what extent?

Side Effects - how will other people, your buiness or job, your
leisure time, etc. be affected?

Cost - be sure you know the true cost. For instance if you need
to go on a training course don't just look at the cost of the
course but also what it will cost you or your business in lost
time. You must also be sure what you will gain by the successful
resolution of the problem.

Then you should devise a way of scoring each of these factors
against each solution on your shortlist. The one with the best
score is the one you should use.

#7 Take Action

All you have to do then is implement the decision, make sure
everyone involved understands what is required of them and
ensure you have a way of measuring the outcome.

Having a simple but effective plan for dealing with life's
problems will help you to overcome them and often realise that
what at first seemed a problem is in reality an opportunity to
make things better.
